In this blog, recent RKC graduate Fabio shares how he celebrates, unwinds, and prepares for the year ahead. From career growth to cherished family traditions, discover how his RKC journey has enriched both his professional and personal life. Which programme did you study?

What motivated you to pursue your degree online?

I took advantage of my time off during the pandemic. As an airline pilot, I was idle for a year in 2021, which provided a perfect opportunity to start studying for a degree, thanks to the extra time available. This allowed me to achieve my long-standing goal of earning a degree while preparing for potential future opportunities in an office-based role. Additionally, it was a great chance to broaden my knowledge in leadership and teamwork skills I apply daily in my work. I was also eager to delve deeper into corporate strategy and processes to enhance my understanding of organisational dynamics.

Which courses or subjects did you find most engaging, and why?

I found the module “Building and Leading High-Performing Teams” the most engaging because it closely aligned with my leadership role as an Airline Captain. The module’s focus on the dynamic interplay between leadership and followership, coupled with strategies to elevate team performance to optimal levels, was particularly impactful for professionals like me, tasked with high-stakes decision-making and coordination. Delving into these intricate dynamics and learning to guide a team to achieve peak performance was inspiring and profoundly relevant to my professional responsibilities. Furthermore, as part of the module, we participated in a group exercise where we delivered a group presentation, which allowed us to put our studies into practice, reinforcing the concepts and enhancing our collaborative skills.

Which module or subject was the most challenging for you, and how did you approach it?

I faced two particularly challenging modules for different reasons. The first, ‘Mastering Strategic Consulting,’ was challenging as it was my first university module after a 15-year break from education. I struggled with finding an effective study method and organising tasks. However, the university’s ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Assignment Writers’ material was incredibly helpful in getting me back on track. The second challenge was the last module, ‘Successful Strategic Thinking.’ By then, the aviation industry had recovered, and my work became very demanding, leaving me with little time for assignments. Despite this, the discipline I developed in earlier modules helped me maintain a daily routine of reading and writing, even if it was just for a few minutes each day. This steady approach led me to a rewarding conclusion.

Can you tell us more about the award you received? What does it mean to you personally and professionally?

The awards I received, the MBA in Innovation Leadership and Consulting with distinction and the surprise Subject prize in ‘Business’, hold significant personal and professional meaning. It is a validation of the hard work and dedication I put into my studies after returning to education after 15 years. Managing a busy work schedule alongside academic responsibilities made the journey challenging, but the distinction and prize are a testament to my perseverance and commitment throughout the programme. It’s a meaningful recognition of my efforts and growth during this period. Professionally, this recognition boosts my confidence and provides further motivation to pursue my goals in leadership and business. It also acknowledges the skills and knowledge I have developed, reinforcing my credibility in my field. The award strengthens my professional identity and opens doors for new opportunities, whether advancing in my current role or exploring new challenges.

What skills or knowledge gained during your studies do you feel will be most valuable in your professional life?

Reflecting on my academic journey, some acquired skills and experiences stand out as particularly valuable for my professional life:

Critical Thinking and Intellectual Growth, efficient time management, and resilience have equipped me to approach complex problems strategically and make well-informed decisions. I anticipate leveraging them in roles that require strategic leadership, innovative problem-solving, and collaboration under pressure.

Effective Productivity Management, by balancing academic demands with a busy work schedule, taught me to prioritise tasks, set realistic goals, and maintain a disciplined schedule. Breaking down large projects into manageable steps proved essential for sustaining momentum, a methodology I can confidently apply to professional environments.

Perseverance in overcoming challenges was a transformative experience. I learned the importance of persistence in achieving long-term goals, strengthening my ability to stay focused despite adversity.

Are there any strategies or tips you found particularly useful that you would recommend to others?

  • Do not Procrastinate.
  • Read and write from day one of the module.
  • Submit the mid-module draft as complete as possible to get more thorough feedback. 
  • Have a study buddy from your course to talk about lessons.
  • If you have any doubts, Ask!
  • After completing the assignment, ‘let it rest’ for 5-7 days and return to it with a fresh mind before submitting it. You will notice details/errors that you didn’t before.
  • Finally, enjoy the process!

Lastly, how did you manage studies during holiday season?

During my academic journey, I found myself in the middle of a module while on my Christmas holidays, which made studying challenging due to the festivities and family commitments. However, with some planning, I managed to balance both. I kept it simple, I left the main holiday days from the 24th to the 26th of December free to enjoy with family, while on the others I planned to study 2 hours every morning after waking up to enjoy the rest of the day guilt-free. Slowly but steadily. At this time of the year, I had to be realistic, I couldn’t push too hard on studying alone as time with family and friends was very important. Setting a realistic goal every day was key to maintaining balance.

Robert Kennedy College and York St John University Graduation – Class of 2022

Tuesday, November 15th, 2022 – a rather unremarkable date, unless you have been invited to the York Minster in York to be cheered on by family, friends, and tutors, for achieving your Master’s degree. And boy, was this a remarkable day for those who could make it to York!

The third week of November is a great time of the year in York. We get to meet (or meet again) our students on a day of celebration of their efforts in a truly awe-inspiring venue – one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe.

Weather is generally bad in November though – and Tuesday was no exception, with quite heavy rain in the morning, yet nothing could wipe the smiles off the faces of the hundreds of students getting gowned up and ready to walk into the Minster. RKC’s own were present in big numbers – more than one hundred graduates were in York, and so were we. We caught up with some of them and will be sharing their thoughts on the experience in a short series of posts in the near future, so stay tuned.

Graduation Ceremony – To go or not to go?

Let me start by clarifying, at least for those who don’t know, it is not mandatory to attend the graduation ceremony to be awarded your degree.

You have worked hard for your degree, completed all your assignments and submitted your dissertation, meeting all the criteria for completing and being awarded your degree. And not being able to attend the graduation ceremony will not deny you your degree. The graduation ceremony is just that, a ceremony. The ceremony celebrates the successful completion of your degree programme and marks the start of the next phase of your life/career.

So, should you attend your graduation ceremony? Well, it is a personal choice. The internet is filled with vlogs and stories of people choosing to go or opting not to attend the ceremony. Unfortunately, I did not attend either of my graduation ceremonies (graduate and master’s). Both times, not by choice. I don’t regret it now; it was a long time ago. And I don’t think I regrated it back then, apart from the fun photo ops and wearing the robs and the funny hat. I would have loved a photo looking like a graduate celebrating my degree.

But the ceremony is important. Case in point, every year, a number of our (Robert Kennedy College) graduates fly from all over the world to attend the graduation ceremony at the university in the United Kingdom (UK). They spend a lot of time and money to participate in the ceremony – travel, stay and socialise. They do this because they see value in attending the ceremony.

The following five points might give you some insight in helping you decide on whether or not to attend your graduation ceremony.

(1) Money

The bases of most decisions we make in our lives. Attending the graduation ceremony can be a significant financial commitment, especially if you are staying or working in another country. You will have to arrange a visa, for which you might have to travel to the embassy/consulate. Plan your travel to and stay in the university town, which is not a minor expense—changing your wardrobe to meet the requirements of the graduation ceremony—keeping a budget for food and other social activities. If you have family travelling to attend your graduation ceremony, you must budget for them all these expenses. These expenses could lead to a substantial financial outlay, so plan for it well.

(2) Time

Our regular readers know how much we stress the importance of effective time management. You must take time off work, time away from your family, and time away from regular life. While making time to attend your graduation can impact the normal working of your life, it can also be just what the doctor ordered. The graduation ceremony will be a joyous time; it will help you remove your mind from life’s worries. And if you can extend your trip into a proper holiday, you will recharge your worn energy and can return to your regular life with a bang!

(3) Networking

While attending the graduation ceremony is a time for celebration, it can also be an opportunity to expand and solidify the networks you have made. You will not only have the chance to meet your professors and coursemates face-to-face to build on the networks you have already created but also meet with the staff and students of the university, which can provide you with new opportunities to network.

(4) Travel

A number of our students use the opportunity of attending their graduation ceremony as a getaway. We all get so caught up with work and life that we forget to take a break; we keep pushing that long cherished and overdue holiday. So, since they are already travelling to another country to attend the graduation ceremony, they make it into a holiday, most of whom travel with their families. And the hardcore workaholics of our students find a way to squeeze in a few business meetings.

(5) Celebration

At the end of the day, your graduation ceremony is a celebration. It might be fulfilling a lifelong dream of earning a master’s degree. It might be the end of one chapter of your life and the start of another. It might be the opportunity for a new career or the advancement in your current job. Or it might just be a celebration of the hard work and long nights you put into earning your degree. Whatever your reason, the graduation ceremony is a time of joy and celebration, whether by yourself or with your friends/classmates/family. So, have fun, takes photos and proudly wear that funny hat!

Robert Kennedy College and York St John University Graduation – Class of 2021

For most of us, isolation has been a big part of the last couple of years. There are a lot of unique opportunities and experiences that we have missed out on because of the lockdowns and limited travel options. Because of COVID-19 protocols, many universities had suspended graduation ceremonies, resulting in many students missing out on the “cherry on the cake” and not being able to experience the graduation ceremony. 

Last week York St John University celebrated their students by conducting the graduation ceremony at York Minster. Thirty-four proud Robert Kennedy College students also attended the graduation ceremony to receive their degree certificates.

The ceremony was a happy occasion for the graduating students who worked hard to earn their master’s degrees. They celebrated it with their fellow students, the faculty and their families. To celebrate the occasion the Mayor and Sheriff of York were also present.
