Dirk Vorster – An RKC Student

Personal & Professional Background

Could you briefly introduce yourself and your professional background?

Hello, I’m Dirk Vorster from Johannesburg, South Africa. I’ve been in software development since school and have worked in ERP consulting since 2002 (24 years). I’m a SAP ERP consultant with four certifications: SAP Finance and Controlling (FI-CO), Business Intelligence & Data Warehousing (SAP Netweaver), SAP Analytics Cloud (Analytics), and SAP Analytics Cloud (Planning). I typically work for multinationals on a contract basis, both locally and internationally.

What is your current job title and key responsibilities?

Currently, I’m building my own companies in electronic engineering and software, among other things. My job title is founder.

How has your career evolved over the past 25+ years?

I started in software development (front-end and back-end — I code in 11 different programming languages), moved into IT consulting, and progressed into senior technical roles. I eventually became an ERP Manager and Analytics team lead for international projects, managing both on-shore and off-shore teams.

Which countries have you worked in, and how has this international exposure shaped your professional outlook?

I’ve worked in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The exposure has been invaluable — it matured my way of working and taught me to collaborate effectively with diverse, interesting people.

Career Motivation & Academic Journey

What motivated you to pursue an MBA in Finance & Information Systems at Robert Kennedy College?

The main reasons were that the course is fully online, internationally recognized, and flexible enough to allow me to study while working. I also appreciated the combination of Swiss quality education and British accreditation.

Why did you choose this specialization specifically?

I have a strong Finance background — I worked as a branch accountant for an international hotel chain before transitioning into IT.

How did you decide on continuing your studies with an MSc in Data Analytics?

I’ve been programming since school, so it felt natural to pursue both strong business and deep technical qualifications.

What role did lifelong learning play in your career decisions?

I learn something new every single day. I believe the more you know, the more you can learn — it continuously expands your frame of reference. Coming from computer programming and finance (I also completed my articles for Chartered Financial Accountant), moving into IT and ERP consulting was a logical progression.

Experience at Robert Kennedy College

How would you describe your overall learning experience at RKC?

Amazingly good. The lecturers, course content, and presentation of material are all very high quality. The lecturers are world-class and extremely helpful.

What aspects of the online learning model worked best for you as a working professional?

The flexibility and ability to pace myself were key. With demanding work responsibilities, being able to set my own schedule made a huge difference. I tried to do a little every day to avoid last-minute pressure.

How did the British-accredited curriculum add value to your academic and professional profile?

Extremely positively — it carries significant weight both locally in South Africa and internationally.

Were there any particular modules, projects, or assignments that had a strong impact on you?

Yes — I especially enjoyed the Finance modules presented by Dr. David Duffil; he is extremely competent. I also found the Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence modules very useful and directly applicable in practice.

Skills, Growth & Application

What new skills did you develop during your MBA?

Strategy, Finance, and Information Management were significantly sharpened.

How have you applied your learning in your current job role?

I build digital reporting dashboards for myself and clients. I practically apply analytics, finance, Information Management, and Digital Marketing in the software I develop. Everything integrates very well.

Career Impact & Outcomes

How has your education at RKC influenced your career growth or opportunities?

Very positively. The qualifications give credibility in the workplace and carry real weight.

Recognition for achievement and added weight to the ideas and arguments I present. Companies value capable, competent professionals who have both the track record and the formal qualifications.

Global Perspective & Personal Reflection

How has working and studying across different countries influenced your mindset?

Working in Africa and the Middle East showed me how cultures differ in their approaches and reasoning. It taught me to be accommodating, flexible, and open-minded.

What challenges did you face balancing work, study, and personal life — and how did you manage them?

Projects often involve long hours and intense deadlines. The key is making deliberate time for family and maintaining good work-life balance.
